Located in the bustling South Kensington tube station arcade, this bright and bold pop-up store juxtaposes historic artwork from the museums in-house poster collection, dating back as far as 1908, with modern design and playful colour schemes to create a fresh and eye-catching retail space.

One of the integral features of the store is the bespoke cash desk which incorporates the well-known magenta underground logo as a functional and key aspect of the store. The pop-up aims to provide a fun and engaging shopping experience in line with the London Transport Museum at Covent Garden Piazza.

The project brief outlined the need for a cost effective and simple back drop to effectively display the colourful, diverse and complex product range offered by the museum. Made In Place Design set about creating a bespoke shop display system that fulfils these requirements in an imaginative way and complies with the functional demands of a busy and heavily regulated environment.

The result is an incredibly flexible pop-up store without compromise. The system itself can be removed and reconfigured in a number of ways. Many pop-up environments are discarded at the end of their life, and so creating a system that can be recycled or up cycled easily, made common sense for the London Transport Museum as it will save considerable costs in the future.

Ken Wingate of Made In Place Design commented: “With pop-up retail worth well over £2billion to the UK economy, we’re experiencing increased demand from our clients to produce pop-up stores that echo the same brand message, personality and values as their larger high-street stores. For us, this project was about capturing the fun side of the London Transport Museum brand and presenting it as a pop-up with a powerful impact. We are a big fan of the London Transport Museum and it’s been great to work on their first ever pop-up.”

Other features of the store include a bespoke mid floor fixture that integrates with the perimeter system, wall mounted tablets to enable customers to read up on products as well as browse the extensive poster collection on the London Transport Museum website.

Located at 8 Station Arcade, South Kensington Underground Station, the pop-up opened its doors for business on Monday 12th October.

With the South Kensington pop-up complete, attention now turns to the new Piccadilly pop-up and the St James’s display unit due to launch in coming weeks.
